Maybe
we could include Puerto Rico with the Virgin Islands. Perhaps do a
little history lesson/info about Puerto Rico/ St. Thomas and discuss
conditions etc. Many Americans do not even realize the Puerto Ricans
are US citizens.
I agree that raising money for a specific relief organization is best for this.
Great website Ing! Thanks.

from ING on e-mail:
We had 5 kids today: Sophie, Lili, the twins, and Devon Everhart.
Things went great! We did the mapping activity. We generated 7 ideas for who to help, and narrowed it down to 4: raise money to help the homeless, help homeless children, St John (US Virgin Islands), and Florida.
Next week, I could see you going 2 directions:
1) further explore what these groups of people might need. Roots and Shoots had a section on refugees that might have some guidance for the people displaced by hurricanes.
2) We could all do some homework and come up with project ideas for these 4 groups to bring to the class next week. Specifically, I think we should contact the Empowerment Center and find out what projects they have that we could help with. Hurricane relief groups seem to want money more than things. We could do a project to raise money to send to one of those groups. I found an interesting website that focused on the inequalities of aid available to people of color that lists some relief organizations. https://www.colorlines.com/ articles/how-help-residents- puerto-rico-and-us-virgin- islands-recover-after- hurricane-maria
Ingrid A doesn't have a nickname, so you can call me "Ing" like my sisters do.

R&S Week 1 blog entry
Today was great! We had four teachers and three students and we all enjoyed ourselves. We made name tags and talked about ourselves a bit. We also shared something we are looking forward to this year.
We discussed the R&S Jane Goodall program and watched a short video about it. We then practiced flying our peace doves and went to see the bird habitat garden by the green.
The teachers met after class to discuss the calendar and then started brainstorming ideas for our Helping People section of the year.
Thanks everyone!
Rachael
